Commercial solar installation in Oregon is a way for businesses to lock in their electricity costs for the long term and ultimately bring down operating expenses. While federal incentives for residential solar installation were eliminated in 2025, the commercial solar incentives remain in place for installations that are completed by the end of 2027. That makes now the time to investigate solar installation for your business so you can maximize your ROI and power your operation into the future. In this article we’ll cover all the commercial solar incentives that are available, the timeline associated with claiming them, and the solar installation process in Oregon.

What are the benefits of commercial solar installation?

Most business owners are always seeking ways to bring down their operating costs and make their company more resilient for the long term. Solar installation, particularly when paired with battery backup, does exactly that.

By investing in solar to power your commercial property you can significantly reduce your energy costs over time. Using solar insulates you from the external and uncontrollable variable that is rising electricity costs. That means more predictability for your business when it comes to your expenses.

When you pair solar with an energy storage system you gain the added benefit of automatic backup power in the event of grid outages. Solar-powered battery backup kicks in almost instantaneously when the gird goes down and allows for protection from multi-day outages. It is an ideal solution for those needing greater resiliency and protection from the liability of grid failure.

    Federal Investment Tax Credit

The Federal Investment Tax Credit has been revised as a part of 2025’s One Big Beautiful Bill. The good news is that the tax credit worth 30% of the solar system’s value still exists for commercial entities looking to invest in owning their energy. The caveat is that projects must be installed along certain timelines in order to qualify for the credit. Below is an overview of the key dates to know when considering your solar timeline.

Key Dates for Claiming Federal Tax Credit

    • 1/1/26 – 7/4/26 – Sign up for solar between Jan 1st, 2026 and Jul 4, 2026 and you will have until 12/31/29 to complete your project and claim the federal tax credit against your investment
    • 7/5/26 – 12/31/26 – Sign up for solar after July 4th, 2026 and you only have until 12/31/2027 to complete your installation and claim the federal tax credit.
    • 1/1/27 – 4/1/27 – Q1 2027 will be the last opportunity to sign-up for solar and claim the federal tax credit. Later in the year it will become difficult to guarantee completion of installation prior to the end of the year. We are recommending all orders are submitted prior to April 1st, 2027

    Energy Trust of Oregon Incentives

The Energy Trust of Oregon (ETO) offers incentives that help businesses evaluate and ultimately install solar and energy storage. As a Trade Ally of the Energy Trust of Oregon, Power Northwest is qualified to help you claim these incentives to reduce your upfront costs and simplify your transition to renewable energy. Here’s a brief overview of the available incentives:

Solar and Battery Storage Development Assistance – $5,000

A common first step for many business owners considering investment in a solar and battery system is to commission a feasibility study for their property. Up to $5,000 of the cost of that study can be covered by this incentive from ETO allowing you to receive a custom design and detailed analysis of the cost and benefits of installing solar and storage at little to no out-of-pocket expense.

Solar for Businesses – $0.10/W up to $10,000

When you ultimately decide to install solar, working with an ETO Trade Ally like Power Northwest also allows you to receive up to $10,000 off the upfront cost of the system. The exact value of this incentive is determined based on the system size in Watts.

Battery Storage for Businesses – $300/kWh up to $9,000

Similarly, if you pair battery storage with your solar system, you can claim up to an additional $9,000 off your upfront cost. This incentive amount is based on the storage capacity of the system that you choose to install.
